The 12-3-30 workout, 12% incline, 3 mph, 30 minutes, went viral a few years back and never really went away. Here’s what it actually costs in calories, calculated properly rather than guessed at, broken down by body weight.

Notice the ratio holds steady at almost exactly 2.5x across every body weight. That’s because the incline’s added cost scales proportionally with weight, same as the baseline cost does, so the relative jump from flat to 12-3-30 stays constant even though the absolute numbers change.

Why the Ratio Is So Consistent

The MET value for a given speed and incline doesn’t change based on your body weight, MET is a ratio of your energy use to your resting energy use, and it’s the same number whether you weigh 110 lb or 230 lb. Since calories = MET × weight × time, and MET stays fixed for two people doing the identical session, the ratio between any two conditions (flat vs. incline, for example) is identical for everyone, only the absolute numbers scale with weight.

Is 12-3-30 Actually a Good Workout?

The calorie math supports it as a legitimate session, not just a social media trend. At roughly 2.5 times the calorie cost of a flat walk at the same pace, it delivers meaningful energy expenditure while staying at a walking gait, meaning lower impact on your joints than running would produce for a comparable calorie burn. Whether it’s the best use of 30 minutes depends on your goals, running intervals will generally burn more per minute if your joints can tolerate the impact, but for sustainable, repeatable sessions, especially for beginners or anyone managing joint stress, the physiology behind 12-3-30 holds up.

A Few Practical Notes

  • 3 mph is a genuine walking pace for most people at this incline. If you find yourself needing to jog to keep up, the belt speed may be faster than intended for your stride length.
