How to Take Accurate Measurements
To maximize the accuracy of your Navy body fat measurement, follow these steps:

How Validated Is This Formula, Exactly?
The Hodgdon-Beckett circumference method was developed at the Naval Health Research Center and validated against hydrostatic (underwater) weighing, the laboratory reference method available at the time. Published validation puts the correlation at approximately r=0.90 against hydrostatic weighing, with a typical error margin of about 3 to 4 percentage points. That’s good for a tape-measure method, but it’s an estimate, not a direct measurement, and it should be read as a range rather than an exact figure.
A Common Mistake: log base 10, not natural log
If you’re calculating this by hand rather than using the calculator above, the formula uses log10 (common logarithm, base 10), not ln (natural logarithm, base e). Using the wrong log function is the most common manual calculation error people run into with this formula. Most calculator apps default to log10 when you press “log,” but scientific calculators and some programming languages default to natural log, worth double-checking.
When the Navy Requires a Full Body Composition Assessment
Sailors are first checked against maximum weight-for-height tables. If you’re under that threshold, no further measurement is required. If you exceed it, a Command Fitness Leader (CFL) measures your abdominal circumference. Per Navy guidance (Guide 4 / NAVADMIN 178-15), if abdominal circumference exceeds 39 inches for men or 35.5 inches for women, a fuller circumference-based assessment, the calculation this page performs, is required to determine compliance.
This Is Not the Army’s Method
This calculator uses the Navy’s Hodgdon-Beckett formula specifically. The Army’s current standard, as of July 2026, is a completely different, simpler calculation: Waist-to-Height Ratio (WHtR). If you’re trying to check Army standards rather than Navy standards, use our Army Body Fat Calculator instead, the two services do not use the same formula, and a result from one doesn’t transfer to the other.
An Important Limitation
Like all circumference-based methods, this formula estimates body fat from measurement ratios, it doesn’t distinguish fat from muscle directly. A Sailor with a large waist from a strong core and a Sailor with the same waist measurement from body fat will get the same estimate, even though their actual body composition differs. This is a known, published limitation of the method, not a flaw specific to any particular calculator, including this one.
This calculator provides an unofficial estimate for personal reference. Official Navy Physical Readiness Program assessments are conducted by a designated Command Fitness Leader per current Navy instructions. Verify your official status through your command.
